Universitas Islam Riau (UIR) is the oldest higher education institution in Riau Province. It was established on September 4, 1962 (23 Dzulqa’dah 1382 AH), under the auspices of the Riau Regional Islamic Education Foundation (YLPI).
Initially, UIR was located on Jalan Prof. Mohd. Yamin, S.H., Pekanbaru. However, in 1983, through the efforts of the Riau YLPI leadership, UIR successfully acquired 65 hectares of land on Jalan Kaharuddin Nasution KM 11, Perhentian Marpoyan, for the development of a new campus. Subsequently, in the 1990/1991 academic year, all faculties of UIR officially relocated to the new campus.
Currently, UIR comprises nine faculties: Law, Islamic Studies, Engineering, Agriculture, Economics and Business, Teacher Training and Education, Social and Political Sciences, Psychology, and Communication Sciences, as well as postgraduate programs at the Master’s (S2) and Doctoral (S3) levels.
As the largest Islamic university in the central Sumatra region, UIR is distinguished by its integration of Islamic values into all academic and managerial aspects through the Catur Dharma concept, which encompasses Education, Research, Community Service, and Islamic Outreach (Dakwah Islamiyah).
The establishment of the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) represents a strategic response by Riau Islamic University to address the limited availability of dental professionals in Riau and Sumatra. Projections indicate that the dentist-to-population ratio in Riau was only 9 dentists per 100,000 people in 2023, significantly below the national ideal standard of 13 dentists per 100,000 people. Furthermore, the distribution of dental professionals remains uneven, with the majority concentrated in major cities such as Pekanbaru.
The establishment of FKG UIR has received full support from the Riau Regional Islamic Education Foundation (YLPI) and all elements of the university, providing a strong foundation for the development of the faculty. FKG UIR is designed with a distinctive focus on phyto-dentistry research, which explores the application of medicinal plants native to Riau in dental science, as well as the integration of Islamic values into its curriculum. With UIR having achieved the Excellent (Unggul) accreditation status, this faculty is expected to become one of the university’s leading faculties in the future.
To become an outstanding faculty of dentistry in education, research, and community service based on Islamic values, while contributing to the advancement of dental science.
